I have wanted to visit Switzerland for years. I finally made it there this summer. There's something to be said about the lack of travel anxiety when public transport just works. It's efficient. It's punctual. It's reliable. It is expensive, but is cheaper that having to schlep a rental car around.
Swiss life seems to be planned around efficiency. How can a resident find everything they need on a daily basis with minimal hassle? - seems to be the guiding principle for city planners. I loved it!
Swiss Alps are breathtaking! What's equally impressive is the infrastructure that Swiss people have put in place to make this beauty accessible. 2 trains & 3 gondola rides (all timed connections) can take you from Zurich to the top of 12,000 ft. peaks.
There's one thing I hated about Switzerland - The amount of smoking in public places. It seemed like half the population smokes. There's no buffer zones either. You can't smoke indoors in a restaurant, but it is perfectly fine to smoke right outside the door. Coming from California, this was a shock to my system. I believe Europe is about a decade behind in fighting big tobacco. I hope they get there soon.
